The four major mystical (Sufi) orders that influenced different regions of Pakistan are the Chishti, Suhrawardiyya, Naqshbandi and Qadri orders. The Chishti Order became popular mainly in Punjab and Sindh. It emphasized love, compassion, tolerance, service to humanity and peaceful coexistence. Saints such as Hazrat Baba Farid Ganj Shakar greatly influenced this order.
The Suhrawardiyya Order spread mainly in Sindh and southern Punjab. It focused on following Islamic teachings, gaining religious knowledge, maintaining discipline and serving society. Hazrat Bahauddin Zakariya of Multan is one of its most well-known saints.
The Naqshbandi Order became influential in Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Kashmir. It emphasized strict observance of Islamic law (Shariah), self-discipline, spiritual purification and remembrance of Allah through silent devotion.
The Qadri Order spread across many regions of Pakistan, including Punjab, Sindh and Balochistan. It encouraged generosity, humility, kindness, devotion to Allah and service to humanity. Followers of this order promoted peace and unity among people.
Although these mystical orders developed in different regions, they shared common teachings such as love for humanity, tolerance, peace, equality, honesty, compassion, spiritual purification, remembrance of Allah, respect for others and service to society. Their teachings continue to influence Pakistan's religious, cultural and social life today.
